Abstract

1373610 p-Alkyl and alkoxy benzoic acid p<SP>1</SP>- cyanophenyl esters F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 23 Feb 1973 [23 Feb 1972] 9052/73 Heading C2C Compounds of general formula wherein R represents a straight chain alkyl group containing 4 to 8 carbon atoms or a straight chain alkoxy group containing 5 to 8 carbon atoms are claimed per se. These compounds may be prepared by the following processes: (a) reacting a compound of the general formula wherein X represents a leaving atom or group with p-hydroxybenzonitrile or (b) dehydrating a compound of the general formula at the reflux temperature of the mixture or (c) reacting a compound of the general formula wherein Y represents a halogen atom or an arylsulphonyloxy group, with cuprous or sodium cyanide or (d) dehydrating a compound of the general formula at atmospheric or reduced pressure or (e) diazotizing a compound of the general formula in water at a temperature of 0 to 5‹ C. with the addition of hydrochloric acid and sodium nitrite and reacting the diazonium salt so obtained with cuprous cyanide.
