Abstract

1372674 Packing-processing machine MICHELS 8 May 1973 [7 July 1972] 21893/73 Heading B80 A machine for processing packings such as cardboard, synthetic material, etc., comprises an input end for successively introducing the packings to be processed into the machine, a horizontal path for guiding the packings being introduced, said path extending from said input end along a length at least as long as the longitudinal dimension of the largest packing to be handled by the machine, and at least one horizontal conveyer extending from said horizontal guide path to the output end of the machine substantially at the level of said guide path and having with said guide path an overlapping area. According to the invention the horizontal conveyer comprises endless chains 3a, 3b travelling in vertical planes and having pivoted driving lugs 4 provided with counterweights 8, whereby each pivoting lug is maintained along the upper horizontal rim of the respective chain, in a vertical position in which said lug can drive a packing, and means, such as a circular ramp 22, for guiding the pivoting lugs of the rising run of each chain of said conveyer. In this manner each of the lugs draws level with the horizontal guide path, being in a retracted substantially horizontal position, then each of said pivoting lugs is restored to its vertical position by its counterweight, when said lug escapes from said guiding means only if the lug is not engaging the bottom of a packing being at least partially on said horizontal guide path. As shown, packing cases, boxes, etc., are conveyed through the machine for sealing their closure flaps by means of the pair of chain conveyers 3a, 3b which register with the inner faces of two laterally spaced, horizontal, tables 2a, 2b, and an upper, centrally, and adjustably, located chain conveyer 16 which is synchronously driven, in the opposite direction to the conveyers 3a, 3b and which carries a series of fixed driving lugs 19 spaced at intervals corresponding to those between the lugs 4. The box guiding path at the input end of the conveyers comprises the lefthand ends of the tables 2a, 2b and a pair of longitudinal bars 20a, 20b which are carried by support arms 18 for the conveyer 16. The space e between the tables 2a, 2b is adjustable by sorew-and-nut mechanism, not shown. Each lug 4 is pivoted at 9 to one limb of a U-shaped member 6 detachably fastened, at 6a-6d, to a selected chain link 7. A box 21 is pushed on to the input end of the machine, either manually or, by the preceding unit of a packaging machine, until the rear edge 21a of the box has at least cleared the distance l, Fig. 3, above the return pulley 5A, whereupon the box is moved by the conveyers 3a, 3b and 6 along the table to pass first, second and third, box-flap folding bars 22a, 22b; 23a, 23b; and 26a, 2b and also gumming stations 24a, 24b with rotary discs 25a, 25b.
