Abstract

1372428 Cutting tobacco rods GENERAL CIGAR CO Inc 23 Nov 1971 [25 Nov 1970] 54298/71 Heading B4B [Also in Division A2] A rotary severing device for cutting a longitudinally moving continuous rod into rod segments comprises a frame 14 reciprocally movable parallel to the axis of the continuous rod; a support plate 20 transversely mounted on the frame 14; a cylindrical ledger guide 28 held by the plate 20 near its free end; a rotatable shaft 44 supported by the plate 20 with its axis parallel to the axis of the continuous rod; a knife blade 58 eccentrically mounted on the shaft 44 and coating with the guide 28 to cut the continuous rod when the blade 58 passes transversely therethrough; drive transmission means on the plate 20 extending to the shaft 44 from a parallel drive shaft 80 of a length to permit reciprocation of the frame 14 therealong; and means to reciprocate the frame 14 and simultaneously rotate the drive shaft 80 so that the blade 58 cuts one of said rod segments from the continuous rod with each complete reciprocation of the frame 14. The ledger guide 28 includes a transverse slot (32) through which the blade 58 passes to cut the continuous rod. The shaft 44 is driven by a Whitworth drive 82 via the drive shaft 80 (which is of square section), a drive collar 66, and a timing belt 72, and is so synchronized that the blade 58 passes through the slot (32) at its highest rotational speed. The slot (32) may extend right across the bore 30 of the ledger guide 28, e.g. when used for cutting a continuous cigarette rod or a continuous cigar bunch rod, or only partly across as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3, when used for cutting the tobacco sheet linking a continuous series of cigar bunches which have been wrapped and linked by a helically wound tobacco sheet. The device is also stated to be suitable for cutting continuous paper, plastics or rubber rods or tubes.
