Abstract

1351130 Continuous rod cut-off MOLINS Ltd 26 May 1971 [26 May 1970] 25192/70 Heading A2C A cut-off device for cutting a moving continuous cigarette rod or other continuous rod, comprising a reciprocating ledger which supports the rod during cutting and which first accelerates and then decelerates during each stroke in the direction of movement of the rod, and a knife for cutting the rod, is so arranged that the knife both starts and completes the cut either before the ledger attains its peak velocity or after the ledger attains its peak velocity so as to avoid any disturbance of the cutting due to the backlash in the ledger drive that occurs when the ledger reaches its peak velocity. The ledger may be as shown in Specification 1000174, and the knife preferably has a part helical blade such as that shown in Specification 1238458. In order that the cutting may still take place during a part of the ledger stroke which includes a point in time when the ledger and rod speeds are equal, following the rephasing of the knife and ledger timing, the peak velocity of the ledger is increased by increasing the radius of the crank that drives the ledger.
