Abstract

1372269 Laterally aligning webs ILFORD Ltd 6 Dec 1972 [30 Dec 1971] 60774/71 Heading B8R A device for laterally aligning a web 1 comprises an approach roller 2, a steering roller 3 and a departure roller 4 the ends of which are in triangular configuration, the axis of the approach and departure rollers being fixed and parallel whilst the steering roller is movable in one plane along the tangent of the ellipse constructed on the corresponding ends of the approach and departure rollers as foci and passing through the corresponding end of the steering roller, the latter comprising a rotatable portion 7 and a separately rotatable end piece 9 and spindle 10, the spindle being constrained to move along said tangent by a slotted member 15 and biased towards the approach roller side of the member. As shown, the axis of the steering roller is slightly tilted so that the web tends to track towards the end piece 9 which is rotated on contact with the web thereby causing the spindle to travel, against the bias of a spring 16, along the slotted member 15 to restrain the web tracking. Alternatively, end pieces and slotted members may be provided on both ends of the steering roller which is normally parallel to the axes of the approach and departure rollers. The end pieces may be of larger diameter than the rotatable portion 7 and tapered at the interforces to accommodate webs with curling edges.
