Abstract

1371623 Magnetic separators G H JONES 29, Feb 1972 [3 March 1971] 5926/71 Heading B2J Apparatus for separating solid magnetic particles from . a fluid current includes an inclined separation device 12; electro-magnets 9, 10 for producing a magnetic field transverse to the fluid flow; and means 16 for cyclically controlling the flow of feed fluid, washing fluid and scouring fluid through the device. In operation, the feed fluid is caused to flow down through the device 12, and the magnets are energised so that the magnetic particles adhere to the device; the flow is then stopped and replaced by a washing fluid flow, after which the magnets are switched off and the adherent particles are removed by scouring fluid. An outlet valve 14 controls the flow rate, and the output from the device 12 can be diverted into compartmemts of a receptacle 15 by means of a variable-position funnel 13. The device 12 is constituted by a box having a plurality of spaced apart plates arranged therein to define passageways for the fluid flow, each plate having grooves on one surface thereof (Figs. 1, 4, 5 and 9a, not shown). The plate boxes may be mounted on a rotor for movement into and out of magnetic fields produced by permanent or electro-magnets (Figs. 6 to 8, not shown).
