Abstract

1370749 I C engine fuel injection system ISUZU MOTORS Ltd 18 Oct 1972 [20 Oct 1971] 48080/72 Heading F1B A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine comprising a fuel injection pump 2, a delivery valve 3, a fuel line 4, a fuel injection nozzle 5 and an additional liquid supply system 6, 7, 8, 9 and 53 connected to any desired point between the delivery valve and fuel injection orifice of the fuel injection system. The pump plunger 21 is operated by a cam 1 and forces fuel past the valve 3 to the nozzle 5 until a spill port 25 is in line with a groove 23 in the plunger. The valve 3 includes a piston 33 and as the valve is closed by spring 31, a depression is created in the fuel line 4, the value of the depression being dependent on the volume of the piston. This depression causes liquid from a tank 6 to flow through a valve 7 and past a check-valve 9 to a passage 53 in the nozzle 5 and hence into the fuel passage 52 in the nozzle. On the next stroke of the plunger 21 the liquid is forced through the nozzle orifices either before, or mixed with the fuel and is atomized in the same way as the fuel. The liquid is water, which reduces the temperature in the combustion chamber and hence the formation of oxides of nitrogen. Other liquids may be used and the tank 6 may be pressurized. The valve 7 may be driven synchronously with the engine.
