Abstract

A device 11 for producing pilot injection similar to that of Fig. 2 of Specification 1, 060,181, is modified in that the restriction 22 through which the pilot fuel is forced by a piston 23 is a variable restriction formed by a spring-loaded piston 33 co-operating with orifice 22. The pilot fuel flows through orifice 36 in piston 33, the pressure drop across which orifices varies the position of the piston in relation to orifice 22. Orifice 22 discharges into a groove 18 through which the main fuel injection also flows when piston 23 opens the main orifice 20. The pistons 23, 33, slide in a bore 19 in a valve member 14 which lifts off its seat on the end of member 11 at the end of injection to permit fuel to return from the passage 13 leading to the injector to the pump 9. In Fig. 2 the valve 14 is replaced by a non-return valve 40 and a non-return valve 41 closes the end of piston 23 until the latter opens the main orifice 20. A restriction 44 in the passage 21 controls the rate of discharge of liquid from the space between the pistons 23, 33.
