Abstract

1369524 Exhaust silencers U GRAJECKI 16 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 52899/72 Heading F1B A gas duct is made of acoustically absorbing material and has a gas inlet and a gas outlet, between which are baffle walls which increase the length of the flow path of the gas and cause multiple reflection of sound waves until they are oriented oppositely to incident acoustic waves. the duct walls and the baffles comprising a material having a density of at least 2gm/cu. cm and the ratio of reflected acoustic energy to incident acoustic energy being less than 0À05. Fig. 4 shows angle plates 9 positioned in a duct 1 and indicates the multiple reflection of sound waves 10 between the baffles, so that some of the waves are finally travelling in the opposite direction to that in which they entered the duct. Fig. 5 shows an alternative arrangement of baffles 5 and 7 Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) illustrate arrangements of baffles in a curved duct. Fig. 8 (not shown) shows a circular section pipe having radially inwardly projecting baffles attached to the internal wall of the pipe so that the gas flow follows a helical path. There may also be a baffle plate mounted at the axis of the pipe and extending diametrally part-way across the pipe.
