Abstract

1496206 I C engine exhaust silencers GENERAL MOTORS CORP 30 April 1975 [3 May 1974 (2)] 17949/75 Heading F1B A helical baffle 44 between an inner tube 20 and an outer tube 12 defines a flow-path 56 between a chamber 52 at one end of the silencer and the outlet 28 of the inner tube or openings (118), Fig. 4 (not shown), intermediate the ends of the inner tube. The tube 20 communicates with the chamber 52 through openings 58 having a total flow cross-section substantially equal to the cross-sectional area of the inner tube. The path 56 is longer than the path through the tube 20 between the openings 58 and the outlet 28 or intermediate openings (118), Fig. 4, to produce interference of the sound waves and attenuation of a particular range of sound frequencies. Helical baffles 66 and 73 between the tube 12 and further tubes 34 and 60 provide flow-paths 72 and 82 in parallel with the flow-path between the inlet 36 and the openings 64 in the inner tube 34 to provide attenuation of two further ranges of sound frequencies. The openings (132), Fig. 5 (not shown), in the inner tube (134) upstream of intermediate openings may straddle the upstream turn of the baffle (136) and the end caps may include portions normal to the tube axis. The specification discloses specific dimensions of the silencer and frequencies attenuated and further arrangements of flow-paths, Figs. 7 and 10 (not shown).
