Retorts.-Steam is introduced into a coal-gas retort, for the purpose of making water gas, by a distributing-block D fitted at the back of the retort A and supplied with steam through a superheater pipe C, which is situated in a waste-gas flue B and is led through the stop end of the retort tn the block. The block is provided with a steam inlet b, an expansion and heating chamber a, and distributing-passages c.
