Abstract

1367536 Composite casting R N PENNY 20 Nov 1972 [18 Nov 1971] 53512/71 Heading B3F [Also in Division F1] A housing for the turbine or compressor of a gas turbine engine comprises a pre-formed body 1 of ceramic or other heat resistant material defining the internal shape of the housing, and an outer protective casing 2 formed by casting a material on the outside of body 1. The latter may be of silicon nitride or china clay preformed using a vacuum formed mould and may comprise a single unit or a series of sections 3 incorporating reinforcing grids or rods 6. The abutting edges of sections 3 have interengaging tongues and grooves 4, 5. The outer surface of body 1 includes serrations 7, indentations, or outwardly extending tongues or pegs to provide a key for the protective casing 2 cast therearound. Casing 2 may be of aluminium alloy of uniform or non-uniform thickness.
