Abstract

1,214,852. Combustion chambers. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. Jan. 5, 1968 No.49407/67. Heading F1B . [Also in Divisions B3 and F2] A piston 10 for an I.C. engine has an annular insert 22, prestressed to be in a state of compression, defining an opening 21 in the head 11. The ring 26 is heat shrunk on to the insert 22 to provide the prestress. The piston 10 is formed by casting around the prestressed insert 22, the flange 24 locking the insert in position. The upper piston ring groove 15 is formed by a ring 16, e. g. of a ferrous alloy. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the prestressed insert (27) is integrally connected by radial arms (31) to a ring (32) defining the upper piston ring groove (15A). The ring 26 is made from a material, e. g. austenitic or martensitic stainless steel or a nickel-ferrous alloy, having a co-efficient of expansion greater than or equal to that of the piston material, e. g. aluminium or aluminium alloy, and greater than that of the insert material, e. g. a nickel-ferrous alloy or grey cast iron.
