Abstract

1364931 Continuous casting DEMAG AG 2 Nov 1971 [3 Nov 1970] 50840/71 Heading B3F At least two sheet-like streams of coolant 14, 15 or 16 are directed at the surface 9, Fig. 1, of a continuously cast strand 1, e.g. as it descends vertically through a guideway of rollers such as 6, 7, the streams interengaging before the coolant impringes on the surface, at least one of the streams having its centre-line inclined to the surface. The area 20, Fig. 9, of impingement on the surface, may be a strip or elongate oval, transversely of or along the surface, the latter orientation being applied particularly to a billet (as opposed to a slab or sheet) casting. More coolant is delivered at the middle of the area 20 than at the ends, as described in Specification 1,326,625 and as indicated by the curve 25, Fig. 10, and if three jets 14-16 are employed, e.g. to cool a zone 8 between adjacent rollers 6, 7, and the middle spray head 12 is nearer the strand, there may be a hump 24 in the distribution curve. The streams meet at a line 19 and separate narrow areas 20 may thus be sprayed or a wide band as shown in Fig. 9. By providing an imbalance between two interengaging jets, the resultant spray may be diverted, e.g. toward one or other roller 6, 7. By periodically raising and lowering, out of phase, the pressures in two streams, the spray may be caused to sweep back and forth across the impingement area. Momentary or continuous changes in the impingement area may be obtained by moving the spray heads angularly. Each spray head, having an outlet slot or series of openings, may be adjustably mounted in a housing, or groups mounted in common housings, each spray head being fed from a separate source. As shown the spray heads 11-13 are mounted on a pipe 10 which can be moved towards or away from the surface 9. The coolant may be pumped away or drawn through openings in the rollers. The rollers may differ in diameter and the streams may impinge on their quadrants facing the strand 1 as well as the strand surface 9.
