Abstract
1363927 Descaling UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 20 Dec 1971 [21 Dec 1970] 58968/71 Heading C7E A method of descaling a stainless steel oil heater comprises one or more scale oxidation steps each followed by a reduction step, the steps being carried out in the range 510-677C. In the oxidation step, carried out between 1-7À8 atmospheres, 1-15 mole per cent O 2 is passed over the scale, preferably admixed with steam or N 2 . This is-followed by flushing with steam or N 2 , drying with air, and purging with N 2 . The reduction step uses the same pressure range, and 5-50 mole per cent of H 2 , or CO in the form of producer gas or gas from a cracking unit, is passed through. Flushing is carried out as before and the process can be repeated until the scale is loosened. It is then acidised in 1-5% citric acid at pH 2-6 to remove the loosened scale.
