Abstract

1363643 Tension and compression testing FOX & OFFORD Ltd 29 July 1971 [6 May 1970] 21705/70 Heading C1S [Also in Division B5] A multi-purpose apparatus for moulding. extruding and testing plastics comprises an elongate rigid open framework, a reciprocable plunger which co-operates with a pre-selected moulding means or extruding means or testing means inserted inside the framework and located therein'in a predetermined position. In the first use of the apparatus, Fig.1, a mould 11, 32, 33 and an injection means 12 are located in the framework 10, which comprises a body 14, 15, 16 with openings 23, 24, 27 providing access to the interior in which is located a plunger 13. The injection means 12 includes a heating band 37, a bore 38, a spreader 39 and a nozzle 40. In a second use of the apparatus, Fig. 4, the injection means is replaced by transfer injection means comprising a body 51 and nozzle 53. The plunger 13 has a hooked end for attachment to and removal of the waste plastics. When used for compression moulding, mould halves with heating elements are located within the framework. When used for testing, the test piece is located between clamps 73, 72, Fig. 7, the latter of which is fixed to a reciprocable plunger. Compression tests may be carried out by inserting a pair of plates with the test piece between them, whilst for deflection testing a pair of anvils is used with an elongated specimen supported between them.
