Abstract

1361496 Splicing webs R L R LUCAS 24 June 1971 [29 June 1970] 29653/71 Heading B8R Apparatus for splicing a replacement web 27 carried by a standby roll 28 to a running web 29 unwinding from a supply roll 30 comprises a relatively displaceable pair of rollers 4, 5 between which is clamped the adhesively prepared leading end 34, 35 of the web 27; when the roll 30 is nearing exhaustion the roller 4 is driven by a motor (10), controlled by tacho-generators (24, 25) Fig. 1 (not shown) to accelerate the web 27 up to the speed of the running web 29, thereby advancing the web through a V-shaped guide shoot 16, 17 to pressure rollers 13, 15 which when activated urge the webs 27, 29 together to effect the splice, the expiring web 29 then being severed by the operation of a cutter 18. The roll 28 then becomes the supply roll, and a new standby roll 30 can be positioned in the apparatus, the splicing of the replacement web to the running web then being effected as described above but utilizing rollers 6, 7 instead of rollers 4, 5 and cutter 19 instead of cutter 18. Initiation and control of the splicing operation may be effected automatically.
