Abstract

1,142,778. Electronic musical instruments. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 3 Nov., 1967 [8 Nov., 1966], No. 50106/67. Heading G5J. An electronic musical instrument comprises tone generators having associated individual formant fitters and a plurality of keys connecting outputs from selected fitters to the instrument output, the keying operation shifting the Q factors of corresponding fitters between two stable values to vary the timbre of the instrument output. The formants may be parallel or series resonant circuits (Figs. 1, 2, not shown), having resistors whose values are changed on depression of a key to change the Q factors. The resistors may be replaced by photo-cells or transistors. The formant fitters may be included in the generator circuits and arranged to control the output frequencies of the generators (Figs. 3, 4, not shown). Each fitter may have a plurality of resonant frequencies, one to determine the ultimate pitch of the generator, and others to determine the ultimate formant. The ratio of the resonant frequencies may be 1 : 2 for simulating open organ pipe tones, or 1 : 3 for simulating stopped pipes, or may be non-integral for imitating reed pipes (Fig. 5, not shown).
