Abstract

1360899 Anionic polymerization of lactams CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED 12 July 1972 [27 July 1971(2)] 32634/72 Heading C3R The anionic polymerization of lactams is effected in the presence of co-catalysts of the formulae where R<SP>1</SP> to R<SP>3</SP> are C 1 -C 18 alkyl or alkenyl; aralkyl, alkoxyaryl or dialkylaminoaryl, the alkyl portion in each case being C 1 -C 6 ; aryl with 1 to 3 benzene rings; or C 5 or 6 6 cycloalkyl; R 4 is one of the preceding or H; and X is O or S. Typical compounds I are cyclic isocyanates and II heterocyclic derivatives of barbituric or thiobarbituric acids; various literature references are given for their preparation. In a preferred embodiment two or more cocatalysts of different activity are used to control the rate of reaction or degree of polymerization. There are 37 examples illustrating the use of various such co-catalysts for the polymerization of caprolactam, alone or with gamma-methyl caprolactam or laurolactam, or pyrrolidone using sodium or its hydride or lactam salt as catalyst.
