Abstract

1360887 Carbon fibre composite BENDIX CORP 15 May 1972 [25 June 1971] 22627/72 Heading C1A A carbon composite is obtained by moving a felt mat of carbon fibres 10, through a bath 30 containing a suspension of a carbonizable resin in a volatile liquid so as to impregnate the felt with the resin, drying the felt at a temp. between 100-200‹ F., cutting a plurality of pieces 46 of desired shape, placing a number of selected pieces in a mould 50 corresponding to the desired shape and applying pressure and heat to the mould to produce a cured resin/fibre composite of desired density and then carbonizing the cured composite in an inert atmos. at a temp. of 1500-2000‹ F. In a preferred embodiment before being treated in bath 30, the felt mat 10 is treated in a sizing bath 20 with a suspension containing 1-2% by wt. of a second carbonizable resin, in a volatile organic liquid, drying the treated fibre in drier 24 at 100-150‹ F. and then curing the treated fibre in oven 26 at 200-300‹ F., the cured coating so obtained improving the bond in the final composite. In addition to resin, the bath 30 may contain graphite in suspension. The density of the carbonized composition may be increased by pressure impregnating the composite with a solution of a resin in vessel 60, this solution also containing powdered graphite, drying the impregnated bond at 100-200‹ F., curing the resin by heating at 200-300‹ F. and carbonizing the impregnated composite at 1500‹ to 2000‹ F. in an inert atmosphere. The impregnating and carbonizing steps may be repeated until the desired density is achieved. The density of the carbonized composite may also be increased by pyrolytically decomposing a hydrocarbon gas by means of the heated composite so that carbon deposits in the pores and on the external surface of the composite.
