Abstract

1359047 Hydroperoxides; phenols SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 31 July 1972 [2 Aug 1971] 36248/71 Heading C2C In a process for the preparation of organic hydroperoxides in which oxygen or an oxygencontaining gas is passed through a liquid reaction mixture comprising an organic liquid phase dispersed in an aqueous liquid phase, the organic liquid phase entirely or partly consisting of the compound to be converted into a hydroperoxide, the dispersion is maintained by stirring and by the presence of a finely divided solid which is insoluble in either of the two liquid phases. Phenolic compounds are prepared by cleaving a hydroperoxide or a mixture of one or more hydroperoxides prepared by the above process. Sulphur dioxide is the preferred catalyst for the cleavage reaction. In examples, hydroperoxides. are obtained by oxidation of cumene and meta-diisopropyl benzene in the presence of talc or barium sulphate prepared in situ. Resorcinol and meta isopropyl phenol are obtained by treating corresponding hydroperoxides with solutions of sulphur trioxide in acetone.
