Abstract

1358646 Rolling mills SCHLOEMANN AG 4 Sept 1972 [6 Sept 1971] 40889/72 Heading B3M A universal rolling stand includes a main frame 1, which supports a pair of vertical rolls 10, 11 and provides guide surfaces for the chocks 7a, 8a of a pair of horizontal rolls 7, 8, and two frame caps 3 and 4 which are secured by adjustable (but not prestressed) tie rods 5 to the main frame. The tie rods are each oppositely threaded at 18a and 19a so that rotation of the rods cause the caps 3 and 4 to move towards or away from each other, thereby adjusting the gap between the horizontal rolls. The rods are carried in the main frame by bearings 32 and 33, and are rotated in unison by motor driven worm gear units 25. The upper end of each rod has a threaded sleeve 27 on which a nut 30 is carried. Springs 31 act on each nut to urge the housing cap 3 upwardly in order to take up backlash between the threaded portion 18a of the rod and a surrounding adjusting nut 18. To remove the rolls from the stand, the nuts 18 are rotated upwardly on the the tie rods until they move on to the sleeves 27. The cap 3 can then be raised by a crane, and the rolls lifted successively from the main frame. The chocks 8a of the lower roll 8 are made narrower than those of the upper roll to facilitate their removal. The vertical rolls are adjusted by rotating threaded spindles 17 by motors 16 (one for each roll). A vernier scale 22 (Fig. 2) is associated with one of the tie rods to give an indication of the screwdown position of the horizontal rolls.
