1357435 Aldehydes BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 6 Oct 1971 [7 Oct 1970] 46434/71 Heading C2C An alkoxyacetaldehyde or an acyloxyacetaldehyde (generally of [formula where R is C 1 -C 6 alkyl or acyl) is prepared by catalytic dehydrogenation at 150-350‹ C. of a corresponding alkoxyethanol or acyloxyethanol generally of formula ROCH 2 CH 2 OH) in the presence of a basic nitrogen compound, e.g. ammonia, urotropine or a C 1 -C 8 alkylamine. The catalyst may comprise one or more transition metals (e.g. copper, silver or brass) and a basic metal oxide (e.g. MgO, ZnO 2 ) and the process may be carried out at 20-100 torr. in the presence of an inert gas and steam.
