Abstract
1357178 Watt meter GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 15 Nov 1972 [17 Nov 1971] 53378/71 Heading G1U A watt meter using the "quarter squares" principle applies, in alternate half-cycles of the supply voltage V1, V2, firstly (when V1 is positive) the sum of the supply voltage VI, V2 and a voltage proportional to a load current I1, I2 developed across a resistor R4 and secondly the difference between the supply voltage V1, V2 and a voltage proportional to the load current I1, 12 developed across an equal resistor R3, to a full-wave rectifier FW having a square-law current load ladder on its D. C. side, and the average current flowing on the A. C. side of the rectifier is indicated on a meter M, damped by capacitors C3, C4. Selection of resistor R3 or R4 is effected by diodes D6, D7 respectively. The circuit includes various protective arrangements including (a) two Zener-diode/resistor combinations D4, R5 and D5, R6 which, when the circuit is operating within its normal range operate singly, in alternate half-cycles of the supply voltage, each combination effectively adding to the main square-law load ladder, but which, when the load current becomes excessive both break down to limit the voltage across the divider R3, R4, (b) Zener-diodes D1 and D2 which protect the D. C. blocking capacitor C1, and (c) a voltage dependent resistor VDR which shorts out voltage spikes.
