Abstract
1356476 Reconstituted tobacco EDUARD GERLACH GmbH 12 Nov 1971 [12 Nov 1970] 52753/71 Heading A2C Tobacco particles are dusted with a finely ground cellulose derivative soluble in organic solvents, moistened with an organic solvent, converted into a granulate by mixing and the granules are pressed mechanically to form a foil. Pressing is effected by passing the granules through a pair of counter-rotating rollers, and the solvent is removed from the foil by evaporation under reduced pressure. The tobacco used is graded by particle size, the finest particles being used to produce wrapper sheets or strips and the coarsest being used to produce foils that can be cut to provide filler material. Suitable cellulose derivatives include methyl-, ethyl-, methylpropyl- and acetyl cellulose, of which methyl cellulose and acetyl cellulose are exemplified. In the examples, tobacco from various sources is used including, in one example, a blend of Brazilian and Sumatra tobaccos. The organic solvent used is a mixture of methylene chloride and methanol. Other exemplified ingredients are 1, 3- butylene glycol, diethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide. Suitable apparatus for carrying out the process of the invention is described.
