Abstract

1356309 Maleic modified resins ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 21 Sept 1971 43890/71 Heading C3P Copolymers of butadiene and cyclopentadiene or its dimer may be prepared by thermal polymerization in the absence of a catalyst at 180 to 300‹ C. Acidic resins having an acid number of 10 to 400, a softening point of 10 to 130‹ C. and a bromine number of 30 to 80 and comprising a reaction product of such copolymers with 1 to 40 weight per cent based on the copolymer of an α,#-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, may be prepared by reacting the copolymers with the dicarboxylic component. Alternatively the reactions may be effected simultaneously. The products may be hydrogenated or oxidized, or reacted with ammonia, amines, diamines, hydroxylamine, alcohols, dialcohols, water or alkali metal salts. In Examples 1 to 11 butadiene-cyclopentadiene copolymers are prepared by thermal polymerization and the products reacted with (12 to 15) maleic anhydride.
