Abstract

1,175,766. Carboxylated polymers. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 19 Sept., 1968, No. 44635/68. Heading C3P. An unsaturated polymer is reacted with molecular oxygen in the presence of a heavy metal salt catalyst and a saturated aliphatic acid of formula where X is hydrogen or a C 1-10 alkyl group and Y is hydrogen, a C 1-10 alkyl group, or -COOH; or acetic anhydride or propionic anhydride. In the examples a solution of polybutadiene is reacted with oxygen in the presence of cobalt octoate and either acetic or propionic acid. The product may be neutralized with ammonium hydroxide to give an aqueous solution. A polymer of butadiene having a molecular weight of 500 to 10,000, a 1,2-configuration of at least 50% and an acid number of 50-100 mg. KOH/gram of polymer may be obtained.
