Abstract

1356143 Electric couplings WELWYN ELECTRIC Ltd 8 Aug 1972 [24 Sept 1971] 44624/71 Heading H2E [Also in Division H1] The end of a flexible printed circuit is reinforced by a rigid member 3 so that it can be inserted into an ordinary edge connector. A step 4 protects the end of the flexible circuit. The top of the step 4 is preferably flush with the contacts 6. The leading edges of the member 3 may be chamfered (Figs. 8A and 8B, not shown). The termination may be formed (a) by sticking the flexible circuit with glue 8 to a previously formed member 3, (b) by moulding the member 3 using the flexible circuit as an insert, (c) by forcing the flexible circuit into the surface of a partially cured reinforcing member (9, Figs. 6A and 6B, not shown) using heat and pressure so that the member (9) is cured and the contacts (12), conductors (11) and bare portions of the substrate (13) are forced flush with the surface of the member (9), or (d) similarly to (c) but using a layer (17, Fig. 7A and 7B, not shown) of adhesive on a solid reinforcing member (16). Specific materials for all the parts, and specific dimensions, are disclosed.
