1355888 Forceps IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 27 Feb 1973 [21 April 1972] 18632/72 Addition to 1253526 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions B4 and E2] Surgical forceps including a compound lever mechanism of integral construction in plastics material comprises a pair of opposed compound levers each consisting of a jaw actuating memebr I or 2 and a handle 3 or 4 in the form of first order levers flexibly jointed end to end having one common fulcrum 5 between the jaw actuating members and a second fulcrum 6 between the handles, the fulcra and joints being zones of preferential flexure and the distances between the joints and fulcra being such that when the jaw actuating members are in the closed position, the common fulcrum 6 between the handles can be forced, by virtue of the resilience of the plastics material, across a line joining the two joints 7, 8 and towards the common fulcrum 5 between the jaw actuating members. Thus there is provided a toggle action of the levers for locking the forceps in the closed position.
