1355359 Biocidal application of bromophors DIVERSEY Ltd 19 April 1971 [23 March 1970] 24968/71 Addition to 1252774 Heading A5E [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] Germicidal compositions comprise aqueous solutions of a complex of bromine and a non- ionic surfactant of the formula RO(R 1 O) m (R 2 O) n (R 3 O) p H where R denotes hydrogen, alkyl or a fatty acid acyl group, R 1 and R 3 independentely denote ethylene or a mixture of ethylene and C 3-8 alkylenes and the oxygen carbon ratio in the (R 1 O) m and (R 3 O) p hydrophilic groups exceeds 0.4, R 2 denotes any C 2-8 alkylene group or mixture thereof, m is any number of from 1 to 150, n is any number of from 0 to 150, p is any number of from 0 to 150 and the sum of m, n and p is at least 3. The complex may consist of I part by weight of bromine to 1 to 9 parts by weight of surfactant, and may be stabilised by admixture with 1 part by weight of hydrochloric acid based on 3 to 100 parts by weight of surfactant component. The solutions may be stabilized by the presence of hard water salts or other alkaline buffers such as tetrasodium pyrophosphate and sodium tripolyphosphate. The compositions 'may be applied to paper during manufacture to control mould and fungi; may be used for cleaning surfaces such as floors, walls, sinks, bowls, tanks, pasteurizers and pipelines; or may be used as a rinse for dishes and kitchen utensils.
