Abstract
1354493 Resin treated carbon tow NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 26 July 1971 [27 July 1970] 36360/70 Heading C1A Resin treated carbon tow is made by continuously drawing a carbonizable fibre tow linearly under tension through a carbonizing furnace and applying a solution of the resin to the tow, at a point where the tow is still under tension and still travelling in the direction in which it travelled through the furnace, so as to retain the alignment of the carbon fibres in the tow substantially as it emerged from the furnace and removing the solvent for the resin by evaporation. The carbonizable tow may have had a preliminary oxidation treatment. The tow may be graphitized before resin application. The resin may be applied by a porous spreader, e.g. a felt. Specified resins are polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetate, polyesters, polyamides and epoxy resins. In the apparatus shown consisting of a carbonization furnace 10, a graphitizing furnace 11, a gaseous treatment zone 12, a resin solution applicator 14 associated with a reservoir 15 and an extraction hood 17, a tow of previously oxidized polyacrylonitrile fibres 18 is drawn by means of driven rollers 22 and 23 from a supply (not shown) through the nip between rollers 19 and 20, through furnaces 10, 11 and 12, past felt spreader 14, past hood 17, round roller 21, through the nip between rollers 22 and 23 where tension is relaxed. The treated tow is then wound on drum 25 interleaved with paper from supply 26.
