Abstract

1352650 Fastener driving tools SPOTNAILS Inc 6 July 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 31725/72 Heading B4C A safety device, for a fastener driving tool 12 having a nose section 11 from which a fastener, e.g. nail or staple is to be expelled and a trigger 15 for controlling the firing of the tool, comprises a body member 17 which can be slid on to the nose section prior to the insertion of screws 21 into the nose section, a compression spring 18 receivable on a projection 17f and in use bearing against a surface of the tool, and guard piece 20 mountable on the tool 12 by means of screws 23. Inturned flanges (17d) (Fig. 5, not shown) of the body member engage the rear surface of the nose section, and an arm 17e engages or is releasably connected to a link 22 of the tool which link is in operative engagement with the trigger. With the device mounted on the tool, pressing the latter against a workpiece with a predetermined force, e.g. 40 or 70 lbs. will cause the body member 17 to move relative to the nose section and against bias of spring 18. Such movement will also move the link 22 and condition the trigger 15 such that when it is pressed the tool will fire. Actuation of the trigger when the tool is not pressed against a workpiece will not result in firing of the tool.
