Abstract

1351432 Road and like rollers A-T-O Inc 18 July 1972 [13 Aug 1971] 33579/72 Heading B7H [Also in Division F2] An eccentric system for a vibratory apparatus for use in an earth compacting roller comprises a tube 28 having end closures, not shown, supported in bearings for rotation about its axis, and an eccentric bar 36 extending longitudinally and spaced radially inwardly from the tube 28, the eccentric bar 36 having ends coaxial with the tube 28 and carried by the end closures of the tube. The tube 28, its end closures and the eccentric bar 36 constitute an eccentric shaft which, together with its bearings, is enclosed by an outer housing 20. The housing 20 is disposed coaxially within the roller 10, and is rigidly connected at its ends to the roller headers 12 and stub shafts 14. Impellers at the ends of and rotatable with the eccentric shaft circulate a lubricant, such as oil, between the interior of the tube 28 and the outer housing 20 by way of the bearings, thereby lubricating and cooling the bearings continuously. Air in the structure is also circulated through the bearings by the impellers for cooling purposes. In addition to the oil flowing through vents 52 provided with ports 54 in the tube 28, some oil enters a longitudinal tube 51 through central inlets and flows to small metering outlet ports in the end plugs of the tube 51 via filtering material such as stainless steel wool. Solid contaminants in the oil are normally held against the tube 28 by centrifugal force, but any that do enter the tube 51 are filtered out before reaching the metering outlet ports. The roller 10 may be filled with water ballast to increase its weight. If complete filling of the roller is not required, a water cooling effect can be achieved by means of scoops (Fig. 4, not shown) secured to the inner surface of the roller, adjacent ones of which face in opposite directions. With this construction, the roller may contain a small amount of water which the scoops pick up and drop onto the housing 20 for either direction of roller rotation. The shaft 26 formed by the combination of the tube 28 and the eccentric bar 36 is driven by a coaxial drive shaft (not shown) having a splined connection to one of the end closures 30 of the tube 28. The drive shaft is suitably rotatably mounted within the corresponding roller stub shafts 14, and is equipped at its outer end with a drive sheave.
