Abstract

C. or gas turbine engine reaches a predetermined value, a normally open valve 23 closes. In Fig. 1, air flows via path A through air cleaner 11, past valve 23, which is biased away from seat 25 by a spring 24, and into engine intake pipe 10. In Fig. 5, air flows via conduit 30b, past valve 23 and via conduit 30a to an air cleaner (11) Fig. 4 (not shown), valve 23 closing on to seat 25a when the air flow-rate reaches its predetermined value and therby stopping the engine. To prevent the engine starting in the reverse direction if it rebounds from a compression stroke, a further seat 25b is provided. Alternatively, valve 23 may be locked in the sealing position against seat 25a until manually released. A surge chamber (not shown) may be provided to accommodate air induced in excess of the mean flow-rate.
