Abstract
1351214 Character recognition systems PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [26 March 1970] 25029/71 Heading G4R A character recognition system employs two recognition channels which operate according to different techniques. The outputs of the channels are compared to identify the character. The different techniques may be embodied in the character scanner; there may be two scanning devices in the scanner, one photo-electric and the other magnetic for example. Alternatively, or in addition, there may be two processing units which process the signals from the scanner according to different principles. The signals from the processing unit or units are fed to a single recognition circuit or to two recognition circuits operating according to different principles. Where two differing scanning devices are used their outputs may be fed in turn to common processing and recognition circuits whose sequential outputs are compared to identify the character. Where two recognition circuits are used their outputs, each of which may indicate a single character or may be ambiguous, are compared to identify the character. In one arrangement using two processing units and two recognition units, if one recognition unit can not identify the character unambiguously the second processor and recognition unit are enabled, these units operating according to more rigorous criteria than those of the first units.
