1346586 Maleimide derivatives IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 June 1971 [19 Aug 1970] 39932/70 Heading C2C A process for the preparation of substituted N-aryl maleimides comprises condensing together under Friedel-Craft conditions at least one N-aryl maleimide having the formula where Q is a bivalent aromatic radical with a compound having the formula (Q<SP>1</SP>-B) n in which n is an integer having the value 1 or 2, Q<SP>1</SP> is a univalent aromatic radical when n is 1 or the moiety of a bivalent aromatic radical when n is 2, one of A and B is a hydrogen atom and the other of A and B is a group of the formula -Z-X in which Z is -CO-, -SO-, -SO 2 -, or -CH 2 - and X is chlorine or bromine, the molar ratio of maleimide to (Q1-B) n being substantially 1 : 1 when n is 1 and substantially 2 : 1 when n is 2. Q and Q<SP>1</SP> may be carbocyclic or polynuclear heteroaromatic. The products may be used as vulcanizing and cross-linking agents or as polymer intermediates. Examples prepare
