Abstract

1346574 Electric hot plates BRITISH DOMESTIC APPLIANCES Ltd 19 April 1971 [24 March 1970] 14227/70 Heading H5H [Also in Division F4] A heating appliance comprises a heating unit having a transparent or translucent heating surface 1 which is illuminated by a light source 9 when the unit is energized. In Fig. 2 a glass ceramic heating surface 1 has a metal screen 6 coated with an insulating material 10 and a light bulb 9 illuminated when the resistance heating element 5 is energized. The screen may be replaced by an opaque coating on the lower surface of the plate 1 or by specially formed resistance mounting blocks of insulation 7, Figs. 3, 4, 5 (not shown). The coating alternatively may be of fluorescent material and the tungsten lamp 9 replaced by an ultra-violet lamp. The light source may be controlled by a thermostat or thermistor, so as to be energized at a particular temperature and to remain energized when the heating unit is switched off until the temperature drops to that value. The plate 1 may be indented, upper parts of its surface screened with opaque material and edge transmission of light through it may also be used. The temperature of the plate may be indicated by the intensity of the illumination or by various coloured lights. A timer (4) and various control knobs (3) are mounted on a heating appliance having four heating units mounted beneath a glass ceramic hob, Fig. 1 (not shown).
