Abstract
1345407 Feeding webs CREUSOT-LOIRE 22 June 1971 [3 July 1970] 29255/71 Heading B8R [Also in Division B6] A rotary offset web-printing unit comprises framing 1, 2 carrying printing elements including two opposed blanket cylinders 5 with their axes lying in a plane inclined at 45 degrees to the horizontal, a holder for a web roll being provided such that a new roll 20<SP>1</SP> can be inserted beneath the higher printing element and, when nearly exhausted, can be moved to a position 21<SP>1</SP> beneath the lower printing element. As shown, three pairs of roll-spindle supports 16 are equidistantly carried by two endless chains 15 passing around a guide wheel 17 and a drive wheel 18, the latter being driven either manually or by a motor from a shaft 21 through chain and sprocket devices 19, 20, there being a brake disc 24 or 25 on each roll spindle 22 or 23. A roller 30 driven through a slipping clutch and carried by a pivoted arm 28 can be moved into contact with the roll 20<SP>1</SP> to speed it up until its peripheral speed is equal to the web speed through the machine. The web 9 passes from the roll over a roller 32 and around rollers 10, 11, 12 to the machine, the roller 11 being a tension control roller. The roller 32 is carried by arms 33 movable to bring the roller into contact with the reel 20<SP>1</SP>. A crank 36 pivoted to the arms 33 carries at one end a toothed cutting strip 35 and at its other end bears against a retractable stop 37 movable by a handle 39. In operation, when a roll is becoming exhausted, the chains 15 are driven to move the roll from position 20<SP>1</SP> to position 21<SP>1</SP>. A replacement roll 20<SP>1</SP>, the end of which has previously been cut to a point, glued, and held in position by adhesive tape, is inserted, and is rotated by means of the roller 30 until its peripheral speed is equal to the required web speed. The roller 32 is now moved to bring the web from the expiring roll 21<SP>1</SP> into contact with the periphery of the roll 20<SP>1</SP> to join the web 9 to the web from roll 20<SP>1</SP>. Simultaneously, or with a slight delay, the stop 37 is moved to allow the crank 36 to move so that the expiring web is cut by the strip 35. The operations may be carried out automatically under the control of means sensing the diameter of the roll from which the web is being fed.
