Abstract

1343774 Cellular unsaturated polyester resin compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 April 1971 [12 May 1970] 22909/70 Headings C3C and C3P A composition comprises cellular unsaturated polyester resin beads in a matrix comprising a mixture of an alkyd and an ethylenically unsaturated monomer. The cellular beads may be made by dividing into discrete droplets an emulsion having as the continuous phase a liquid monomer having dissolved therein an emulsifier capable of producing a water-in-oil emulsion, an aqueous liquid as the dispersed phase and a polymerization catalyst, and polymerizing the monomer while maintaining the emulsion as discrete droplets. In Examples 1-3, 7-11, cellular beads were made from an emulsion containing water, styrene; a propylene glycol/fumarate/iso- and ortho-phthalate polyester or an alkyd derived from and maleic acid; tert. butyl perpivalate, dimethylaniline, hydrogen peroxide, methylethyl ketone peroxide, sodium polymethacrylate, glass fibres, triethanolamine, 2,4-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide and/or hydrolysed polyvinylacetate. In Examples 4-6 and 8-11 the above cellular beads were incorporated, with optionally glass staple, into matrices consisting of the same composition as that used to prepare the beads or a mixture of a commercial unsaturated polyester resin, styrene, methylethyl ketone peroxide and cobalt octoate. The cells of the beads may contain air, water or an aqueous solution.
