Abstract

1343744 Exhaust gas filter; cyclone separator K AOI 14 Feb 1972 [15 Feb 1971 1 March 1971 17 March 1971] 6746/72 Headings BIT and B2P [Also in Division Fl] An I.C. engine exhaust gas cleaning apparatus containing filter material 7 is itself cleaned by supplying high pressure fluid through pipe 15 to flush out particles collected in material 7. The latter is contained in a cylinder 1 having perforated baffles 5, 6 and a perforated conduit 26. An upstream cyclone chamber 3 is provided to which engine exhaust gas is led through pipe 2. To clean the apparatus the engine is stopped and valve 32 opened to cause closing of pressure actuated dampers 2a and 8a, thus sealing the apparatus at both ends. Valve 16 is then opened and flushing fluid, e.g. compressed air, steam or exhaust gas, supplied through pipe 15, the flushed out matter passing through pipe 17 into a cyclone separating chamber 19. The separated particles drop to the bottom of the latter and are collected and compressed in reservoir 22 under the action of piston 23. The flushing fluid leaves chamber 19 through pipe 20 and filter 21. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the flushed-out matter is collected in a chamber (14a), which may be a removable cartridge, at the downstream end of cylinder 1. In a further arrangement, Fig. 1 (not shown) gas permeable net bags (13) may be used to collect the flushed-out matter.
