Abstract

1342595 Expandable mandrels WALMSLEYS (BURY) Ltd 19 April 1971 [12 Feb 1970] 6756/70 Heading F2U An expandable mandrel comprises a tapered shaft 40 (e.g. of hexagonal section) encircled by a ring (e.g. of segments 46) axially movable along the shaft to change the outer diameter of the ring to grip or release a bore of a core &c. The segments 46 may be retained by elastic rings 48, 50 and a rigid thrust ring 58 encircling an undulated spring 60 to centralize the segments. The segments 46 may have axially or helically serrated surfaces 56 to grip the bore of the core when axially pushed on to the mandrel. Release may be facilitated by compression springs 72.
