Abstract

1,267,412. Extruding; upsetting; making waveguides. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 20 March, 1969 [20 March, 1968], No. 14586/69. Addition to 1,154,732. Headings B3A, B3H and B3P. The Specification relates to a method of upsetting the end of a tube 24 using a compressible sleeve 114, Fig. 7, which has a part 117 of uniform thickness and not tapered as in the parent Specification. The upsetting apparatus is used as in the parent Specification and comprises a forcing member 120, Fig. 1, which compresses the thickened part 118 of the sleeve 114 and sets up a pressure gradient in the part 117. The sleeve is of low-friction material, e.g. P.T.F.E., and may be in two parts. The lengths L 1 and L 2 of the parts of the sleeve are selected in dependence on the pressure applied and the coefficients of friction between the tube 24 and the sleeve and the tube and a mandrel 16. The mandrel 16 is moved axially to pull the tube 24 against the die 158.
