Abstract

1341999 Medicinal films ITEK CORP 19 APRIL 1971 [24 March 1970] 24784/71 Headings A5B and A5R A gelled burn-treating medium, which may be applied to the surface of a body as a film, comprises: a liquid phase, a burn-treating agent therein which is known medically for topical application to burns to promote healing thereof and an amount of a physiologically inert gelformer sufficient to gel the said liquid phase when the medium has been heated above the gel critical temperature and is subsequently cooled below the gel setting temperature to form a substantially rigid elastic structure having a clean, substantially dry, non-adhesive surface. The liquid phase is preferably water, the burn-treating agent may be an anti-infective agent such as a silver compound and the gel-former may be a natural gum, or an alginate. The gel may be provided with a backing, e.g. of polyethylene with an open pore foamed material interposed between backing and gel. Various synthetic polymers, e.g. methyl vinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymers, polyvinyl pyrrolidones, polyacrylic acids and their ammonium salts, polyacrylamide and copolymers thereof with N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide and ethylene/maleic anhydride copolymers are stated to be useful as gel-formers.
