Abstract

1341725 Steerable stub-axle assemblies SKF (UK) Ltd 21 Jan 1971 2875/71 Headings B7H and B7D A steerable stub axle assembly for a road vehicle comprises a carrier 10 adapted for connection to a spring suspension, two co-axial inner bearing members 11, 12, one inner member 11 having a spindle 32 which is secured by a nut 34 in a bore 13 in the carrier 10 and the other inner member 12 being an interference fit in a counterbore 26 and clamped between the member 11 and a shoulder 25, and an outer bearing member 14 having studs 44 for attaching a road wheel and mounted on two rows of rollers or balls 15, 16 disposed between the outer member 14 and the respective inner members 11, 12. A brake disc 41 is secured by bolts 45 to the outer member 14. A rubber seal 46 and a cap 47 seal the bearing. In modifications, the inner member 12 is welded to the inner member 11, or a distance piece is mounted on the inner member 11 between that member and the end of the inner member 12. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the counterbore in the carrier and the inner member fitted therein have mating tapers. A brake drum is secured to the outer member by wheel studs.
