Abstract

1340935 Phenol-modified MF resins; chipboard BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK AG 26 April 1971 [27 April 1970 2 Sept 1970] 11320/71 Headings C3R and C3N An adhesive resin is obtained by condensing melamine and optionally urea up to 85 mol. per cent of the mixture of the two with 1À5-2À5 molar proportions of formaldehyde in aqueous solution to a water compatibility of 0À5-10, then heating the condensate at pH 7À5-10 and 45-100‹ C. with 0À05-0À2 molar proportions of a phenol and, if required up to 0À5 molar proportions each of melamine and/or formaldehyde, until the product has a viscosity of 300-2000 cp/20‹ C. at 63% solids, the product resin containing 1À7-3À0 moles of formaldehyde and 0À05-0À2 moles of the phenol per mole of urea plus melamine. Suitable phenols are hydroxybenzene, resorcinol, the cresols and the xylenols. The adhesive composition may contain an extending filler, e.g. powdered coconut shell, cured aminoplast or phenoplast resin powder, grain or legume flour or sawdust, and a curing catalyst, e.g. NH 4 Cl or, for cold gluing, H.COOH, and fungicides, insecticides, dyes and thickeners. In Examples 1-3 resin solutions of 60-63% solids and viscosity 400-1000 cp/20‹C. are obtained by heating with phenol at 90‹ C. and pH 8À5: (1), a commercial UF resin (U : F = 1 : 1À8), melamine and formalin; (2), the UF resin and an MF resin (M : F = 1 : 2); and (3) the MF resin alone. The syrups are used to prepare chipboard. In Examples 4-6 similar syrups are mixed with coconut shell powder and aqueous formic acid and used for cold gluing wooden panels.
