Abstract

1340325 Gauging CROWN-WHITWELL Ltd 5 Jan 1971 [2 Feb 1970] 4847/70 Heading B3B A distance measuring apparatus, e.g. for a machine tool movable part, comprises a rotatable drum 1 having a helical groove for receiving a wire 4 which has a free end attached to the movable part; a spring motor 9 to apply a substantially constant torque to the drum 1 tending to rotate the drum in the sense to wind the wire 4 on to the drum; means to measure the rotation of the drum 1; and means to move the drum in the direction of its axis of rotation as the drum rotates to maintain the point at which the wire 4 leaves the drum 1 substantially fixed in space. The drum 1 is mounted on a movable table 6 and has coaxially attached to it a first subsidiary drum 7 which winds on and off a further wire 16 from a second subsidiary drum 15. The spring motor 9 has a shaft 14 drivingly engaged to the drum 15 and carries a worm 18 at its free end. A worm wheel 19, pinion 21 and rack 22 moves the table 6 as the drum 1 rotates. The rotation of drum 1 is measured by providing a disc 23 having two tracks of graduation which are read by a lamp 25, lens 26 and optical sensing device 27 to give a digital electrical output signal. In calibrating the apparatus the diameter of the subsidiary drum 15 may be reduced by machining; the axis of the drum 15 may be made non-parallel with the drums 1 and 7 by pivoting a mounting plate 8 after releasing a screw and slot clamp 12, 13; and cam operated rollers may be provided to progressively deflect the wires 4 and/or 16 as the table 6 is moved (Fig. 4, not shown).
