Abstract
1,205,234. Gauging. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 23 April, 1968 [27 April, 1967], No. 19578/67. Heading B3B. [Also in Divisions G1 and G2] Apparatus for measuring long distances comprises a drum 1 having a screw-thread 3 in which a wire 2 is wound, a spring motor 10 applying a torque to the drum tending to wind the wire, guide pulleys 11, 12 and a device 15 for accurately measuring rotational movements of the drum. The apparatus is applicable to the indication of the movement and/or position of slides or the like of machine tools and the wire has a maximum extension of fifty feet. A lead screw 7 is coupled to the drum shaft 9 by a chain 8 and moves a carriage 6 having pulleys 4, 5 to ensure that the contact point between these pulleys is aligned with the point on the drum from which the wire is being withdrawn. Rollers 13, 14 prevent the wire leaving the pulleys and a system of rollers 17-19, around which the wire is led, correct for errors due to the changing distance between the pulleys 4, 5 and the pulleys 11, 12 as the carriage 6 moves along the lead screw. The device 15 indicates each 0À002 inch movement of the wire extended from the rollers 11, 12. Each movement is fed to a counter (not shown) to store and indicate the drum rotation. Errors such as those due to the elasticity of the wire and the catenary position of the extended portion of the wire are compensated for in a modification by an arm attached to the carriage 6. The arm has a cam follower which rides on the surface of a compensating bar. Also, the device 15 is replaced by a radial diffraction grating rotated by the drum shaft 9. A system comprising a light beam and a light-sensitive signal generator which receives the light beam modulated by the cooperation of the grating and a fixed grating produces electrical signals in phase with the passage of MoirÚ fringes across the optical axis of the system on relative movement between the gratings. The signals from the system are converted into electric pulses and counted by a conventional counter. An encoder disc or cooled plate may be used in place of the grating.
