Abstract

1340000 Drying webs POLYTYPE AG 1 Dec 1971 [4 Dec 1970 1 June 1971] 55798/71 Heading F4G [Also in Division B8] A web of material is supported by an air cushion of hot or cold air produced by an airflow device comprising two convex surfaces disposed between two flat parallel walls, the air flowing out of the space between each convex surface and flat wall and at least some of the air flowing initially around each convex surface towards the other. In Fig. 1, air is supplied at 11 and 12 to tubes 1 and 2 disposed in a channel 4 and having their ends closed. Some of the air passing through apertures 13 and spaces 10 follows the surface of each tube and then flows laterally of the web to cause flattening of the web in the transverse direction. Air is removed by suction through tapering slots 6 in a support plate 5 comprising two parts tapering inwardly and towards the base of the channel 4. The web 14 is supported between two parallel but staggered rows of air-flow devices. Other forms of air-flow device are shown in Figs. 7 and 9, several devices being supplied by a common air reservoir 24. If the web is halted, the air flow is reduced.
