Abstract

1339984 Disc brakes; wear adjustment KNORR-BREMSE GmbH 19 April 1971 [13 March 1970] 24114/71 Heading F2E A spot type disc brake has one brake shoe 3 fixed to a movable brake housing 2 and the other brake shoe 4 actuatable either by pressurization of a plurality of brake cylinders 5 arranged on a circle or by rotation of threaded spindle 8 in a sleeve 7, a play-adjusting ring 12 being operable to adjust the position of the sleeve 7 during pressurization of the cylinders 5 to thereby compensate for brake lining wear. The sleeve 7 has a flange 7<SP>1</SP> which extends between the brake shoe 4 and the cylinders 5 and a flanged ring 17 formed with an abutment surface 17<SP>1</SP>, which, with the brake in the released condition, is spaced a distance 18 from the ring 12: the ring 12 is formed as a multi-port bush with an internal circlip 13 and an external sawtoothed thread 14 meshing with a threaded bore in an insert member 14<SP>1</SP> which is fixedly held in an opening in the brake housing 2. A spring 11 biases the sleeve 7 away from the disc 1; as shown, this spring 11 is supported between the ring 17 and the ring 12 but it could be supported on the insert member 14<SP>1</SP> or on the housing 2. With the brake in its released position an outer surface portion 16 of the sleeve 7 bears against a corresponding surface portion of the ring 12 but when the cylinders 5 are pressurized pistons 6 acting through flange 7<SP>1</SP> move the brake shoe 4 towards the disc 1, the shoe 3 being applied by reaction, and thereby the sleeve 7 is moved towards the disc 1. If the clearance 18 is taken up, because of lining wear, the abutment 17<SP>1</SP> will cause the ring 12 to be displaced towards the disc 1 against the force of the circlip 13 and because of its thread the ring 12 will stay in this position. The spindle 8 which is actuatable by rotation of a lever 9 maintains its position constant with respect to the back of brake shoe 4.
