Abstract
1338745 Electrically controlled fuel injection systems BENDIX CORP 21 July 1972 [10 Sept 1971] 34354/72 Heading G1N In an I.C. engine, electrically controlled fuel injection system, a cold start auxiliary circuit is provided in which a signal, representative of the engine temperature when the ignition is switched on but before the engine is started, is initialled stored, and, when the engine is cranked at starting, the stored signal is discharged, the time taken for the stored signal to discharge to a reference level determining the duration of a cold start signal which is initiated when cranking is initiated. The cold start signal is provided to energize injector valve means. As shown in Fig.1, the engine is provided with an electrical system having a three-position switch 38 whose positions correspond to OFF, RUN in which the circuitry is energized by a battery 36, and CRANK in which the starter motor is energized. The engine is provided with an intermittent fuel injection system of the type having a computer 10 triggered by a timing pickup 16 to provide upon each triggering, a pair of injection valve opening pulses, the first pulse having a duration dependent upon intake manifold pressure (sensor 12) and the second pulse having a duration dependent upon the duration of the first pulse and upon engine temperature (thermistor 14), Fig.2 (not shown). The cold start auxiliary circuit 250, Fig.3, has an input A connected to the thermistor 14 and an input C connected to the CRANK contact of switch 38. Before the engine is started the switch is turned to its RUN position and the circuitry is energized so that the input A receives a temperature dependent signal which is stored in a capacitor 206. When the switch is subsequently moved to the CRANK position to start the engine, the signal at input C causes a bi-stable switch 222 to be triggered. Consequent of this, a cold start signal is initiated at terminal 266, and the charge on capacitor 206 is drained so that the voltage at the collector of transistor 240 decays. This voltage is applied to the control electrode of a second bi-stable switch 238 which conducts when the voltage at its control electrode decays to a reference valve. Upon conduction of switch 238, the cold start signal at terminal 266 is terminated.
